Freshwater kicked off because of our totally deep love for the lakes and rivers that have been the backdrop to our best moments. For us—Nathan and Marie, and our four kids—those memories started right here in the Midwest, from the docks of our childhood lakes to the banks of the mighty Mississippi River.
We've since chased that water-centric feeling all over the US and the Americas, but those early, hilarious belly-flops and quiet family hangouts are what we live for. We wanted to bottle that feeling up. That's why we create gear and apparel that lets you carry a piece of your favorite waterway with you.
Our "Aha!" Moment: Why We Had to Go Sustainable

The true challenge came to light when Nathan was teaching a remote sustainability course for students in Africa. It was through this experience that we were confronted with the devastating global issue of water waste and were genuinely appalled by the stats on how much water the fashion industry wastes. For a brand that celebrates the world’s most vital resource, we knew we couldn't just stand by.
Seriously Shocking Stat: It takes about 2,700 liters of water to make one regular cotton t-shirt. That’s enough drinking water to keep a person going for 900 days!
That massive waste is why we decided to "marry" the two things we care about most: loving freshwater and keeping production clean. We just won't let our stuff contribute to that kind of water waste.
